In the Gospels, we can trace the original events of the Passion Week back to their sources. Matthew 21 – Jesus’s triumphal entry into Jerusalem, where a crowd of followers celebrated and blessed Jesus, waving palm branches and lining the road with their cloaks and prayer shawls (This fulfilled the prophecy of Zechariah 9:9). The people shouted out “Hosanna”, which means in the Aramaic language ‘bring the victory, Lord’. They recognized Jesus as Yahweh’s Messiah and immediately expected Jesus to overthrow Roman oppression and set the nation free. Clearly, they wanted victory, but the cross and resurrection would be the victory God ordained for us. Later, they were going to discover that the Victory was beyond anything they could hope for or imagine.
